Review: The Church’s single “The Hypnogogue”-August 29, 2022
Where a post-apocalyptic world meets a tripped-out dystopian musical fever dream is where you’ll find yourself situated with “The Hypnogogue” — a new song by Australian band The Church. Right from the get-go, the listener feels off-center from purposely messy intervals that aren’t quite right. Electric guitars mix with middle eastern styles to bring you into what feels like an alternate universe with remnants of places you maybe knew about but never visited. Where you think the melody will zig, it zags — and the concept video plays into this tense quality flawlessly. Following the adventure of a weary traveler looking to find solace, he agrees to be a part of an experimental process involving what appears to be a dip in a sensory deprivation chamber (not so unlike what you might see on Stranger Things). When everything literally goes up in flames, all that’s left is true love — with the mysterious, stone-faced woman in ornate clothing who performed the psychological procedure. Blending this intriguing narrative concept with a heavy dose of psychedelic pop and expert instrumentation, The Church does not disappoint. Take a journey to the hypnogogue and experience this provocative music for yourself.
