Review: Ruby Topaz – Ruby Topaz Again 23rd Anniversary Remaster – Release date: May 3. 2024
Maybe some listeners remember, the younger ones probably not, but all-round rock duo Ruby Topaz doesn’t include anybody by that name. The duo has been around for some 40 years or so and has ‘quietly’ been coming up with a high-energy, tight, guitar-led rock.
Well, actually not so quietly, but without much pomp, even though its music always deserved to be heard. Brainchild of one Mark Bram, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and a vocalist with a sound anywhere between Sparks’ Russell Mael and Pavlov’s Dog’s David Surkamp (Steve D’Andrea complements on drums and backing vocals), Ruby Topaz were always favoring that prime seventies guitar rock sound covering everything from from hard (blues) rock to glam power pop and arena rock in all its shapes and forms.
The Bram and his music were in the shadows in the new century, and after the duo’s 2023 album Rabbit Hole that included all new material, starting to create a new buzz, Bram decided to select and remaster a choice of his prime time recordings as Ruby Topaz Again 23rd Anniversary Remaster.
The album just shows how good Bram is as a songwriter, guitarist and vocalist and how diverse his music was, sounding both as it was recorded in the prime seventies or yesterday. Could be one of those albums that are perfectly fit for all windows down car rides.
