Review: Saunder Jurriaans – Phantom Limb-Release date November 17, 2023
When you compose music for such a big-hitting TV series like Ozark and The OA, the expectations for your follow-up project can turn out to be quite a burden. And if you also have a critically-acclaimed debut album, like L.A. composer Saunder Jurriaans had with ‘Beasts,’ those expectations can be even higher.
Yet, it seems Jurriaans didn’t flinch, and went into his new album Phantom Limb actually playing recording everything by himself, without even the help of his soundtrack collaborator Danny Bensi.
What becomes evident throughout this album is that Jurriaans has a fully eclectic taste in music, and doesn’t shy away from complex rock structures often associated with the best prog rock bands around.
Yet, with all of the 10 tracks here, Jurriaans comes out completely unscathed by either the complexities of his music or the tasks he had to surmount, coming up with an utterly intriguing album.
