Elk City ‘Above the Water’

New Jersey music collective Elk City are not exactly newbies, as they have been around since 1999 and heyday of Parasol Records and its adjacent labels. The band revolves around its founders, artist/ vocalist Renée LoBue and producer/drummer Ray Ketchem. Rounding out the band are guitarists Sean Eden (Luna) and Chris Robertson (Feed, Punch Havana) and bass guitarist Richard Baluyut (Versus).Since then, they have released five albums and three EP’s, gathering a staunch fan base with their quite undefinable sound that veers through any number of rock-based genres.

This time around, Elk City are back with ‘Above the Water,’ a new album released through the new Magic Door Record Label, founded by Guided by Voices drummer Kevin March with Ketchem and LoBue, which just might give an inkling of an idea where the band is coming from this time around.

Yet that inkling is just that, because Elk City touch base with anything that brings along a great melody and some intricate musicianship, confirming that they remain one of the still not fully discovered musical treasures.
