Live Review: Sarah Julia – The Fear That This Is Real – Release date – October 9, 2026
If got the impression that there is just Sarah Julia, it is the wrong one. There are both Sarah and Julia, and they are sisters from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and ‘The Fear That This Is Real’ is their debut album.
The sisters, who started out as film and theater actresses in their native Netherlands seem to have a penchant for some serious release titles, as their previous two EP started that tradition – their first from 2024 was titled How Do We Go Back To Being Normal?, while the second one that followed in 2025 was a bit briefer, but no less serious – Only Making It Worse.
Yet that seriousness is not just in the title, but first of all in quite some audible musical and lyrical talent, exhibited in the grooves of this debut album.
Their obvious love for all thing folk flowing through the 10 songs here recorded across the Atlantic in Woodstock, New York with Philip Weintrobe, the producer behind albums by Big Thief, Adrianne Lenker and others, coupled with some deep lyrics, (showing that those release titles were no accident), present us with a duo worthy of musical exploration. Both Sarah and Julia seem to have a deep understanding of folk music and how to present their indivdual views through it.
