Review: Blacktop Mojo’s single “S.A.D.” (Song About Drugs) – Release date July 17, 2026
Things are brewing slowly but heavily in East Texas (Palestine, Texas, to be precise). Vocalist Matt James and his crew that go under the banner of Blacktop Mojo like all things classic – as in all that is considered classic in rock – and you can take a not-so-wild guess what that means looking at who the band already toured with – Clutch, Marshall Tucker Band, Bon Jovi, Sammy Hagar… need more? All that can be heard in their latest single “S.A.D.” is a slow build that explodes into an exemplary hard/heavy tune.
Talking about what this band is all about and the song itself, Jones notes: “‘S.A.D.’ is about the feeling of going too far. It’s about those moments when you’re trying to convince yourself everything is okay when you know you’ve gone over the edge, and you’re praying you can come back.” Produced with a modern alternative rock edge while drawing from the band’s unmistakable Texas roots, “S.A.D.”
Well, there’s a sad note in there in “S.A.D.,” but a good sad one, and nothing really sad about this band, though.
