Review: Sharp Pins – Balloon Balloon Balloon – Release date: November 21, 2025

The adventures of Chicago’s Kai Slater and his Sharp Pins continue, as they have come up with a second edition of their take on all things sixties psych pop. After their brilliant second album with their first offering ‘Radio DDR,’ last March (Mod Mayday 23 came out in October 2024), it took them some seven months or so to come up with ‘Balloon Balloon Balloon,’ another installment that takes them even higher in their jangly guitar and vocal harmonies adventures.

Again, they seem to have reshuffled their collection of the best records by The Byrds, Alex Chilton and Big Star, Tamla Motown soul, and this time, adding that Robert Pollard and Guided by The Voices view of the sixties, particularly in keeping their songs as brief as they see fit, with Ballon 1, 2 and 3, themselves clocking at less than 30 seconds.

Yet, brevity makes no sacrifice for quality here (21 songs to boot!), as they, again, make yesterday’s  immaculate psych pop sound as fresh as new as it should be.
