Review: Duncan Lloyd’s album Unwound – Release date via Reveal Records: July 11, 2025

Not many things you would expect here, unless you are in for some excellent sounds!
First of all, as the summer season starts, there are not that many new releases around, unless you are late, or want to present something unexpected. And yes, in this case it is, as Maximo Park’s Duncan Lloyd goes for something quite (and a bit) different than the mainly electro-sound of his band on his sixth solo album ‘Unwound.’
A change can be good if you have enough different ideas and know how to present them, and Lloyd surely show here both of these. Sure he takes cues from other genres, that spans a wide range from art power pop of XTC, to shoegaze, and Pixies in their poppier phase, to hip songwriters lake late great Sparklehorse and wraps it all up quite neatly into fully thought-out melody concepts with arrangements that fully accentuate them.
At the same time, there is a darkish lyrical theme passing through all songs, but Lloyd is able to strike a delicate balance between the lyrics and the rich texture of the music. Excellent one.
