When somebody says that a certain artist or a band is “all over the place” that is usually not exactly a compliment. It usually means that a band is taking too many cues, but actually doesn’t get anywhere in particular.
Ok, so Manchester, England quartet Dutch Uncles are definitely all over the place on their latest (sixth) album ‘True Entertainment.’ They take their musical cues from as many musical places you can imagine – Yellow Magic Orchestra, Prince, Steely Dan, Ennio Morricone, The Blue Nile, Kate Bush and Roxy Music, are just some of the (few) names cited as inspirations. Here, they have guest vocalists in Metronomy’s Anna Prior and Jonathan Higgs of Everything Everything.
Yet the key for that all over the place becoming a compliment here is the fact that Andrew Proudfoot (the drums), Duncan Wallis (vocals and piano), Robin Richards (bass) and Peter Broadhead (guitar, synth and electronics) make all those cues a consistent whole here. The reason for that is that Dutch Uncles have a very distinctive common thread going through the ten songs here, making sure that all those inspirational elements are placed in an order of their own, making the Dutch Uncles sound, well, like the Dutch Uncles. Electro pop in all shapes and forms, and at its best, too.
