Review: Jonny Couch – Where the Sidewalk Ends – Release date: July 24, 2026
Film buffs, especially those fans of film noir the name of Jonny Couch’s new album (first one after seven years) ‘Where The Sidewalk Ends’ might sound familiar. And it should as it is picked and and inspired by a 1950 film of the same name.
Yet, instead of placing mystery and shadowy streets and bars in a similar musical setting, Couch goes for what he knows and does best – a rocking power pop. And while such a combination might on surface sound incompatible, Couch does a great job of making the whole thing work on its own, all due to some great songwriting and subtle arrangement details he fits into a power pop setting.
As a reminder, Couch was a NYC rock drummer before going solo in 2016. His acclaimed ‘Animal Instinct’ EP earned praise for its blend of soulful pop and rock sensibilities, with Louder Than War dubbing him “a Bryan Ferry pop crooner” and High Times calling his work “charming”. 2019’s debut **’Mystery Man’**further solidified his reputation as a gifted songwriter with recognition in Bandcamp Daily’s “Unsung Power Pop Gems From All Eras” feature and more.
