Live Review: Ty Segall with Mod Lang – Majestic Theatre, Detroit, MI – April 25, 2026

If anyone walked into Detroit’s Majestic Theatre Saturday night expecting a standard retrospective of Ty Segall’s massive catalog, they were met with something far more volatile. Segall didn’t just play his songs; he dismantled and reassembled them into dark, gritty images for 2026.
In a telling foreshadow of this tour’s creative direction, Segall and band opened the evening with “Wave Goodbye,” a track that has typically been a coda in shows of prior years. The message was to wave goodbye to tried-and-true patterns from before and be ready for old favorites with new teeth.

And that message proved prescient, as the Detroit faithful were treated to Segall’s refusal to let his existing discography sit still. Recent Segall power-pop staples such as “Manipulator” and “My Best Friend” were stripped of their clever politeness and injected with a jagged, aggressive energy that leaned heavily into proto-punk and noise-rock territory. The interpretations were visceral—less about the hooks we know by heart and more about the raw, kinetic power of the moment.
Segall is also using this tour to road-test brand-new songs, including “Nowhere” and “Glass,” both enthusiastically received by an audience locked into the Laguna Beach prodigal son.
The highlight of the evening unquestionably was “Finger.” While always a heavy hitter, last night’s rendition was a sludge-drenched behemoth, featuring an extended feedback duel that left the entire theater—and more than a few patrons—vibrating.
The atmosphere inside the Majestic was indeed as electric as Segall’s set, fueled by a performer who seems genuinely bored by the status quo. By the time the house lights came up, the crowd was left breathless, having witnessed a titan of the scene not just resting on his laurels, but actively trying to outrun them.

In an interesting difference from shows at this venue in years past, the audience was certainly enthusiastic and mesmerized, but not resorting to distracting and excessive stage diving. It’s as if the audience has matured along with the artist. If this show is any indication of where Ty Segall is headed next, we should all be very, very excited.
Opening the evening with infectious melodies and super-sweet harmonies were Detroit’s own power-pop wunderkinds Mod Lang. This charismatic, photogenic quartet, fronted by Antonio Keka and Alex Belfie, tore through a high-paced set with its own ear-catching material like “TV Star,” not to mention a cover of “Rambling Rose.”
