Review: ESQ – Off My Rocker-Release date November 15, 2022
Ok, so are we having a classic rock revival, or the genre actually never really went away?
Latter is probably the answer to that question as the dual guitar attack and a punchy melody of the new ESQ single ‘Off My Rocker” amply shows.
ESQ is the project of Detroit’s Larry Sager, and ‘Off My Rocker’ is the fourth single of ESQ’s ‘At Night” EP. While Sager cites The Beatles and Frank Zappa as his songwriting influences, there is also that Detroit, and Michigan hard rocking influence present here, thing stalwarts like MC5 and Bob Seger.
Sager actually packs all that up neatly here, with the guitars (an excellent Johhny Winter/Jimmy Page combination there) and melody all in a good balance throughout.
Sager says, “’Off My Rocker” is about people blindly conforming and not thinking for themselves as well as encouraging people to question authority. My kindergarten teacher complained to my mother about me questioning everything, always asking “Why?”. I was probably just trying to hassle the teacher.”
It is an excellent sign not for ESQ’s current EP, but also the forthcoming one set for December 2022 or January 2023.
