Review: WARREN HAYNES: Dreams & Songs: A Symphonic Journey – Release date September 18, 2026

Serious music enthusiasts consider themselves fortunate to experience a classic live album once or twice a decade. Records like Johnny Cash’s At Folsom Prison (1968), The Allman Brothers Band’s At Fillmore East (1971), and The Who’s Live at Leeds (1970) are timeless testaments to the power of live performance. Destined to join those ranks is the new release from the incredibly talented Warren Haynes. Best known for his work with Gov’t Mule, The Allman Brothers Band, and The Dead, Haynes has delivered a masterpiece with Dreams & Songs: A Symphonic Journey. Recorded in 2019 at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in his hometown of Asheville, North Carolina, the album features Haynes backed by the 64-piece Asheville Symphony Orchestra and a stellar lineup of seasoned improvisers: Oteil Burbridge on bass, John Medeski on organ and keys, Jeff Sipe on drums, and Greg Osby on saxophone, alongside Edwin McCain and Jasmine Muhammad on background vocals.

Every track on this 16-song collection is beautifully executed and a treasure in its own right. While listeners will undoubtedly gravitate toward their personal favorites, standouts include “Banks of the Deep End,” “Spots of Time,” and “Thorazine Shuffle.” The album also delivers a wonderfully emotional moment with a poignant rendition of “Makes No Difference.” If you are in the mood for something with a jazzy flair, the effortlessly cool “Instrumental Illness” hits the mark, while “Shakedown Street” receives a particularly inventive treatment—layering funky bass, sweeping strings, and Haynes’ signature guitar work to create a fresh take on the Grateful Dead classic. Saving the best for last, the breathtaking “One” is performed so beautifully that it may quickly claim the title of your favorite track. But wipe away those tears, because a blistering rendition of “Whipping Post” immediately follows to transport you right back to the heyday of The Allman Brothers Band.

Co-produced by Don Was and Haynes, and mixed by the legendary Bob Clearmountain, Dreams & Songs is poised to go down as one of the all-time great live albums.

Looking ahead, Warren Haynes and Gov’t Mule are gearing up for a fall co-headlining run with Ziggy Marley, kicking off in New York City on September 23rd. Additionally, Gov’t Mule is breaking a 20-year tradition by moving their annual New Year’s Eve celebration outside of NYC, bringing a special “Gov’t Mule & Friends” show to Boston to ring in the new year.
