The Veldt has always been one of alternative rock’s most criminally overlooked treasures. As a band that historically injected a rich, soul-infused vocal sensibility into the swirling, feedback-laden walls of British-born shoegaze, the Chavis brothers have spent decades carving out a space entirely their own. With their latest single and video, “Morning, June and Yesterday”—a stellar sneak peek into their upcoming Spanikopita EP—they prove they are still masters of the craft, balancing rich nostalgia with a relentless drive toward the sonic unknown.

The track itself is a masterclass in atmospheric depth. Instead of burying the melody under a monolithic sheet of noise, the production allows the instrumentation to breathe, creating a cascading, underwater-like motion of heavily modulated guitars and lush delays. Floating effortlessly above this celestial dream-pop landscape are the band’s signature vocals, delivering an emotional gravity that anchors the track’s bittersweet mood. It feels exactly like its title implies: a meditation on the passing of yesterday, met with the hazy brightness of a new dawn.

Complementing the track is a striking music video that acts as a meticulous visual love letter to Vaughan Oliver, the legendary graphic designer whose avant-garde, tactile artwork for the 4AD record label defined the aesthetic of bands like the Cocteau Twins and Pixies. Utilizing high-contrast overlays, deep emerald tones, shifting light refractions, and close-ups of a Fender guitar juxtaposed against elegant, wind-swept silhouettes, the video captures the exact feeling of staring at a classic late-’80s vinyl sleeve in a dimly lit room.

By marrying their signature sonic soul with an elegant tribute to alternative music history, The Veldt has delivered a gorgeous, immersive experience that sets an incredibly high bar for the Spanikopita EP. They remain as vital, cool, and innovative as ever.
