Review: St. Divine’s album The Devil You Know – Release date – June 12, 2026
Whether certain genres or subgenres are meant to go together is often a moot point; in most cases, it depends on whether a band or artist has the ability and inventiveness to create a musical combination that actually works.
So, what if you have more than one genre and want to combine them in your music?
Well, then, you have to take the route New York quintet St. Divine (Judy Ann Nock vox guitar Will Croxton, vox guitar, Mike Ratti, drums Jesse Barnes, bass Phil Y, lead guitar) took on their debut album The Devil You Know.
As you sift through the 11 tracks here, you can encounter quite a few things this band likes: garage rock, punk, art rock, and Americana, and they sneak quite a few things in, sometimes in a single song. What turns out to be quite intriguing here is that Nock and her crew have an excellent tendency to mix and match elements with quite some ease. The opener “SPIT” turns out to be a cross between prime garage rock sprinkled with some grunge. The title track adds subtle hip-hop touches, as heard through the ears of your ‘old-fashioned’ rockers.
Yet they go even further, venturing into Jefferson Airplane-style psych on “We Went Walking,” and even singer-songwriter/Americana territory on songs like “Divine.” Such an approach is always a sort of double-edged sword – it can turn into a chaotic mess, or it could be inspired and inventive and ultimately worth listeners’ time. Luckily for Nock and Co., it is, in large part, the latter here, making this album quite a promising affair.
