The Veldt, the groundbreaking North Carolina shoegaze pioneers, are back with their captivating new single “Black Girl,” accompanied by a powerful new video directed by Rob Weiss and James Eakins. The track serves as the lead single from their limited-edition Spanakopita EP — a tour-exclusive CD featuring new songs and experimental demos, specially created for fans on the road.

The band is currently hitting the road for the Arctic Moon Tour with post-punk legends The Chameleons. Launching April 7th in Minneapolis, the extensive run takes their signature sound across the East Coast, South-Central U.S., and Midwest, with select Canadian dates included.

“Black Girl” draws inspiration from the 1972 film of the same name, reimagining the story of a young dancer’s fierce determination to rise above societal barriers in pursuit of excellence. Infused with that same spirit of resilience and vision, the song drifts through a lush, dream-pop haze with subtle echoes of A.R. Kane, while expanding far beyond traditional shoegaze into richer, more expansive sonic territory.

Rock At Night adds: “The Veldt’s single ‘Black Girl’ takes us to the dreamy landscape, syncopated with a touch of R&B in its rhythm and vocals. This psychedelic ‘dream pop’ gem features hazy, guitar-driven sound and layers of noisy texture.”

Formed in the 1980s by identical twins Daniel Chavis (vocals, guitar) and Danny Chavis (guitar), The Veldt have long occupied a singular space where shimmering shoegaze textures intertwine with soul, gospel, and experimental rock. Drawing inspiration from a diverse range of artists including Prince, Sun Ra, and Pink Floyd, the band has always prioritized atmosphere, groove, and emotional nuance over rigid genre lines.

After relocating to New York City and expanding their lineup with bassist and programmer Hayato Nakao, the group deepened their sonic identity, layering in rich production and electronic elements while keeping a strong melodic core intact. Their recordings reward close listening, and their live performances are known for creating fully immersive, transportive experiences.
