Review: Host Family – Extended Play – Release date: February 27, 2026

Giving your fist recorded outing a title such as ‘Extended Play’ might sound somewhat humble and shy, and that is what listeners might expect from the Los Angeles quintet Host Family, who did just that with their 7-song EP or mini album, whichever way pleases you.

Yet, with those nifty shoegaze guitar licks and some good melody lines, Host Family should neither be shy or humble, as they have that modern take on classic shoegaze down to a pat, with quite a bit of their individuality intact throughout. Of course, you can notice that they have quite a few interesting records in their collection, from My Bloody Valentine and Lush to Teenage Fan Club and elsewhere, but Imogen Lolos, Zac Hernandez and the rest of the band have digested their references so well, that they were able to present them as something quite their own. A very promising debut.
