Review: JustFolk – JustFolk 2012-2025 – Release date: December 10, 2025
You can be on the scene for a while, get a solid fan base, but not get the full recognition your music really deserves, particularly if you take the independent way and don’t care much about social media. You probably need more than just Bandcamp and YouTube presence.
That just might be the story of St. Paul, Minnesota trio JustFolk, who have been around for almost a decade and a half, quietly creating some substantive folk rock under the songwriting hand of one Todd Kolod. Now the band are trying to boast their musical fortunes with a retrospective album with an unassuming title – JustFolk 20212-2025.
And while the title might be unassuming, the music has all of the elements of high quality folk pop/rock. Cherry-picking songs from their four albums so far, Todd Kolod (guitar, vocals), Manolo Diaz (electric guitar), and Steven Gores (keyboard), have obviously come up with some serious, languid song gems that might take time to evolve but leave a trace that spells both inventiveness and experience. After all, Kolod wrote some 70 songs in 70 years and it shows.
