Live Review: Wendy James Band at One NinetyFour Bar, London, UK – October 30, 2025
Nestled beneath the elegant One NinetyFour bar and restaurant at 194 Piccadilly, the intimate downstairs performance space proved the ideal setting for an unforgettable evening with Wendy James and her band. With its cozy ambiance and perfect acoustics, the venue felt tailor-made for the four-piece ensemble, drawing a packed crowd of around 300 into a warm, electric embrace.

Wendy James, the iconic frontwoman of the 1980s sensation TransVision Vamp, took the stage with The Wendy James Band and reminded everyone why her voice has long been a beacon of rebellious spirit. Clad in sleek black, her blonde hair framing a face radiating attitude and sexual charisma, the petite powerhouse commanded attention from the first note. Her enthusiastic smile lit up the room as she joined her talented bandmates — drummer, bassist, and a versatile lead guitarist/keyboardist — who were already locked in and ready to jam.
Drawing from a storied career that includes collaborations with legends like The Patti Smith Group and Elvis Costello, plus an impressive 10 albums spanning 1988 to 2024, James delivered a setlist blending nostalgia and fresh fire. She effortlessly belted out TransVision Vamp classics, including the punk-pop anthem “I Want Your Love” (a UK Top 10 smash) and “Baby I Don’t Care” (peaking at #3 in the UK and Australia). These tracks, born from the chart-topping album Velveteen (which hit #1 on the UK Albums Chart), ignited the crowd, transporting fans back while feeling utterly alive in the moment.

The audience—a vibrant mix of silver-haired devotees and eager younger admirers—responded with immediate energy, cheering, clapping, whooping, and whistling as the night built. James, a natural performer, shared insightful backgrounds for each song, her strong, crisp vocals soaring with comfort and confidence. The joy was palpable, growing with every progression until the room pulsed as one.
Standout moments included the song “A Big Vicious Rumble” from James’ tenth album. During this slower-paced gem, James poured her soul into every lyric. The band’s mastery shone through, with the drummer’s deft work on high hats, cymbals, and brushes on bongos (or high toms), a steady bass line pulsing like a heartbeat, and excellent lead guitar weaving it all together into something truly beautiful. Another highlight was the song “I Want Your Love,” introduced with flair. This TransVision Vamp favorite was built masterfully to an explosive finish, leaving the crowd full of nostalgic memories. “You’re So Great” was dedicated to the audience with the heartfelt words “it’s for us.” The song sparked smiles and a wave of warmth across the enthusiastic listeners. My favorite song, “You’re a Dirtbomb, Lester” was infused with rhythmic, punky energy and a super-thrashing lead guitar, it captured the raw thrill that defines James’ sound.
Having kicked off their tour on October 1st, 2025, The Wendy James Band is in top form — catch them now before James and TransVision Vamp head to Australia for a full reunion tour starting February 2026. This London gig was a triumphant celebration of enduring talent, infectious charisma, and music that bridges generations. Wendy James isn’t just performing; she’s reigniting the spark that made her a star. Simply brilliant.
