Review: Spin Class’s EP Dinner At Derek’s – Release date July 18, 2025

Spin Class feeds fans a fresh serving of new songs on their EP Dinner at Derek’s, which came out this past Friday. With tracks like “Bagel Bagel Bagel” and “Cake,” this project is the perfect EP for carb-lovers who appreciate meaningful lyrics stirred into high-energy instrumentals.

The EP opens with a 20-second track that shares a title with the EP (Dinner at Derek’s). It sounds like a record playing at a dinner party: the track features vinyl crackle, distant chatter, and a few soulful piano chords until a hand slams down on the keys, creating a clashing sound that abruptly breaks the mellow mood. It’s jarring but effective, setting the stage for the rest of the EP’s chaotic yet well-executed journey.

Each of these alt-rock tracks features the same crunchy guitar tone, sustaining the energy surge and buzzing through the whole project. Covering lyrical themes including mental health, intrusive thoughts, and addiction, the band shares their inner experiences with listeners, creating a deeper connection through vulnerability.

Track 4, titled “Mr. Toy’s Flying Wok Noodle Bar,” starts with hypnotic picked guitar and vocals that flow effortlessly from line to line. Halfway through the song, Spin Class leans back into that gritty guitar sound, completely contrasting the much calmer first half. While I rarely compare songs to others, this one sounds like it would fit very well on Radiohead’s album OK Computer — specifically reminiscent “Paranoid Android.”

Working alongside Josh Gallop (Krooked Tongue, Phoxjaw, Sergeant Thunderhoof) at Stage 2 Studios in Bath, Spin Class aimed to capture the unfiltered energy of their live performances. In order to achieve that authentic sound, they chose to track this entire project live. The result is a raw, honest representation of not only the band’s live shows, but also the band members’ personal experiences.

Though five tracks might seem like enough to satisfy your rock & roll taste buds, you’ll likely find yourself craving Spin Class seconds.
