Review: Shunkan – Kamikaze Girl – Release date: May 6, 2025

How many real indie rock artists these days come up with something really fresh-sounding? Ok, there might be quite a few of them around, but they seem to be overpowered these days by music from other genres, whether it is chart pop or something much heavier, or maybe they are just repeating stuff that we have heard before with somewhat diminished enthusiasm.

Of course there’s nothing wrong with repeating stuff, if it is good, fresh-sounding and done with true enthusiasm. That is where Los Angeles indie rocker Marina Sakamoto, aka Shunkan comes in with her new album ‘Kamikaze Girl.’

She brings us here a set of exuberant, enthusiastic, always melodic and truly rocking set of songs that don’t disappoint at any moment, something you can really call summer-sounding rock, the one where you can turn the volume loud, open the windows (the house or car ones, doesn’t matter) and enjoy it all, along with all the passers (or drives) by.
