Review: Sharp Pins’ album Radio DDR – Release date: March 23, 2025
It is not that often these days that a relatively new band is able to channel an established sound and then give it touches that simply make it sound new and fresh as if it was invented yesterday.
That sound is the jangle pop strand of power pop, driven by a great melody, vocals and some nifty guitars, and that band is Chicago’s Sharp Pins. The band has been releasing music since 2019, and their latest (second) album ‘Radio DDR’ sounds like something you have both heard and not heard before at the same time.
Actually, the key man behind this project is one Kai Slater who also plays in Lifeguard and runs a fanzine called Hallogallo, that is also a name for a similarly minded bands and artists from Chicago.
And that sound is unabashed, vibrant, jangly guitars-laden sound that is perfect spring weather fare. Strike that – all-seasons fare.
