Review: The Modbeats – The single The Setting Sons – Release date: February 20, 2025
Recycling sounds that came before your time can be tricky if you don’t really know and understand them, because you then can’t really add your personal touch to the proceedings and it all will sound a bit trite and, well, unnecessary.
Luckily for New Jersey’s The Modbeats, they have completely sussed the sound of the mid-sixties and the Mod movement, its heart and soul and have fully transferred it to these modern times. After all, there seems to be yet another Mod revival going all.
Their latest single “The Setting Sons” proves that they have sussed that sound in full, as if they were there when it was first created, but they have given it that sound suited to modern play, whether it is your favorite streaming service or if you got a brand new 7” single (is there one?).
This time around they seem to have picked up on Jeff Beck’s guitar touches he applied with The Yardbirds as heard by Paul Weller when he was leading The Jam. All great sounds and good sounds never go away.
