Review: Joe Di Zillo – Bringing It Back – Release date: June 21, 2024
Are you yearning for that pop rock sound from the late seventies and early nineties dubbed new wave and championed Then (and later on) by the likes of Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson (and Clash, by the way) and cult U.S. alt bands like Windbreakers and Sidewinders that added a touches of roots music to the proceedings?
Well, if that is so, then you shouldn’t go further than Chicago’s Joe Di Zillo and his latest, aptly titled album Bringing It Back. Supported by an excellent crew that includes family (Edie Di Zillo – Backing Vocals, Michael B. Turner – Guitars, Chris Morrow – Drums, Kevin Lustrup – Bass Guitar, John Kretsos – Bass Guitar), Joe’s songwriting is a fitting time piece that recreates all the sounds new wave brought us, with him and Turner also providing some excellent guitar work, that matches DiZillo’s songwriting.
Anything new? Well, you can counter that question with another one – does it really matter? The answer is ‘it doesn’t’ when it is done as well as Joe and his crew do it here.
