Single Review: The Cold Stares’ single “Horse to Water” – Release date March 28, 2024

Since forming in 2012, guitarist-singer Chris Tapp and drummer Brian Mullins of The Cold Stares considered themselves a two-person band and never intended to add additional musicians. Regardless of their “two-man band” status, they received worldwide attention and have released multiple albums and EPs. In 2023, they added bassist Bryce Klueh to create an excellent and underrated band.

Their latest single, “Horse To Water,” is a perfect example of great songwriting, musicianship, and the value of experience as this song clicks from the opening chords, smoothly transitioning from verse to chorus to the bridge and back again, with an electrifying guitar solo. Who do they sound like? Think Lynyrd Skynyrd meets Paul Rodgers. The vocals of Mr Tapp are a thing of beauty and a rarity in this day and age. He has such excellent command of his voice that very few vocalists can achieve, as he sings with power and grit, but at the same time, there is so much emotion in his voice that he can sing a sentimental ballad that will easily touch your heart. Combined with the superb playing of Brian (drums) and Bryce (bass), The Cold Stares’ “Horse To Water” is a song that exemplifies the talent that this band possesses. Although they are not an overnight success story, their future is looking brighter with the release of their latest project.
