Live Review: Dethklok at GLC Live At 20 Monroe, Grand Rapids, Michigan – September 20, 2023
Dethklok came to GLC Live At 20 Monroe, Grand Rapids, Michigan, with a vengeance. The evening was an incredible display of animation and music as these spectacular musicians brought America’s favorite fictional animated, melodic death metal band. The real-life musicians included Brendon Small on vocals, Gene Hoglan on drums, Nilli Brosh on guitar and, Bryan Beller on bass.
The venue, which holds approximately 2,600 people, was packed from the floor to the balconies. The general admission floor spread apart as a mosh pit filled with thrashing bodies. Screams and cheering from the crowd echoed as the music played, creating an intense, visceral experience.
Brendon Small was as great as ever, delivering amazing vocals and portraying the voices of such beloved characters as Nathan Explosion, Toki Wartooth, Skwisgaar, and Murderface. Between songs, fans were entertained by comical banter. More humor ensued as Facebones, a much beloved Dethklok character, appeared between songs, reminding fans of proper concert etiquette.
Dekthklok blew off the roof of the building and whipped the crowd into a frenzy with hits like “Awaken,” “Murmaider,” “Thunderhorse,” “Go Into the Water,” and “The Gears.” If you have the opportunity to see this mind-blowing event, don’t pass it up. The band is touring North America alongside Japanese sensation Babymetal.
