Blues became a worldwide phenomenon decades ago, partly because of the so-called British blues wave that started back in the early sixties. So, it is no wonder that the British Isles have since than produced a quite a number of exceptional blues artists (who may or may have not stuck to the genre) from The Rolling Stones and John Mayall to Fleetwood Mac and The Dire Straits and many others.

You can freely add to that list Belfast bluesman Dom Martin. This is not only based on his latest (second) album A Savage Life, but also on the fact that Dom is the only artist who has been nominated for five awards at the UK Blues Awards 2022 including Blues Album of the Year (for Live at The Harlington), Blues Band of the Year, Blues Vocalist of the Year, Blues Instrumentalist of the Year and Acoustic Blues Act of the Year

Also, in 2021, Dom won the Acoustic Blues Act of The Year at the UK Blues Awards, as well as nominated for Blues Instrumentalist of The Year and Emerging Artist of The Year. In 2020, Dom won the prestigious Acoustic Blues Act of The Year at the UK Blues Awards.

Dom Martin’s ‘A Savage Life’

On A Savage Life, Martin goes by an old, well-known motto: ‘blues, and nothing but the blues.’ Yet, to be able to do that and come up with some great music, you have to breathe, eat and drink blues, have an incredible instrumental technique and a voice to boot.

And it seems that Dom Martin has all those elements present without breaking a sweat. He’s got the feel, the sound, instrumental capabilities and a great voice.  He can also easily switch from the acoustic delta (“The Man from Nowhere’) to full-blown electric blues Chicago style like on ’12 Gauge.”

Essentially, A Savage Life is a blues lovers delight from track one to track ten, and Dom Martin is a name that will make it big for sure.

Blues lovers in the U.S. should take note that Dom is the UK representative at The International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee (May 6-9).
