Lochness Monster – Working for a Future

The alternative rock space is crowded with bands and artists trying to come up with new twists within the melodic guitar rock. So, is there space for yet another band that spans the ground between the seventies legends like Deep Purple and Uriah Heep and grunge stalwarts turned chartbusters like Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters?

The answer to that question is a certain ‘yes,’ of course, if their music amounts to something that is substantial.

To that effect, enter the Miami-based quartet Lochness Monster with their, 4-song EP ‘Working for a Future.’

Starting back in 2015, the band was formed by guitarist Justin Shaner and currently includes, along with Shaner, vocalist Bruce Donaldson, and the rhythm section of Federico Carradini (Bass), and Rene Rivera (Drums).

It took the band two years to come up with the latest EP, of which guitarist Shaner says “our new songs on this second EP are a result of us not giving up on songwriting through covid and finding creative ways to continue our passion through a time that was difficult to get together.”

The result of commitment and not giving up actually shines through all four tracks here. Placing their sound squarely in the middle of those seventies greats and the more current hard-edged, guitar-driven artists like the aforementioned ones that grew out of both grunge and hard rock in general, Lochness Monster have an assured sound where the melody lines never suffer from overindulgence of hard-pounding guitars and rhythms, making the sound stay in balance throughout.

Whether Lochness Monster will be able to continue their upward trend is yet to be seen (heard), but ‘Working for a Future’ certainly confirms its title.
