Lannie Flowers -Flavor of the Month

Lannie Flowers is yet another guitar pop artist who, based on his releases so far, should have garnered more recognition, his cult fandom notwithstanding. Possibly, ‘Flavor Of The Month’ will rectify that situation for the Texan singer songwriter.

Flowers started making a name for himself with his album trilogy that started with his solo debut ‘Same Old Story’ (2008), continued with critically acclaimed ‘Circles’ (2010) and rounded off with  ‘Home’ (2019) As he explains, the idea was that the three records would loosely trace his life from teenage romance though the rock and roll travel years and ultimately address getting off the road.

As Covid-19 set in, Flowers decided to issue free monthly downloads of songs that didn’t fit thematically on ‘Home’ coming up with 14 singles in total.

Essentially, these fourteen tracks now fully remixed make up what is ‘Flavor Of The Month’ an album that is certainly more then just a gap-filler. What we have here is yet another excellent collection of harmony-drenched, uplifting power pop, this time done as a collaboration between Spyder Pop Records who originally released these songs as singles and Burbank’s Big Stir Records, who obviously have a good nose for great power pop.

Of course, the key lies in Flowers’ fully thought out songs that follow that long line of The Beatles fans, where you can name a two pages list, but lets say that any of these would fans of XTC or Ireland’s power pop pride Pugwash certainly cherish.

Flowers has absolutely no problem with coming up with an excellent melody line, which he supports with equally excellent arrangements lead by baroque pop touches like on “Lost In A Daydream” or great clean guitar lines like on “Good.”

All this makes for a brilliant, uplifting and uniform album that is certainly more than just a collection of equally good singles,
