Live Review: Counting Crows-The Butter Miracle Tour 2021-Meadow Brook Amphitheatre, Detroit–August 15, 2021

Counting Crows-Adam Duritz – sans the familiar dreds

On a Sunday evening Rock At Night arrived at the Meadow Brook Amphitheatre in Rochester Hills, Michigan, a beautiful venue located right on the campus of Oakland University, which is about an hour north of Detroit.  It was about two hours before the Counting Crows Butter Miracle Tour show.  The parking lot wasn’t too full but I could see the excitement and anticipation on the faces of the people doing a little tailgating.

I imagine for most people this was one of their first shows since the COVID outbreak. It felt good to be going out on a summer evening and see Counting Crows, the GRAMMY and Academy Award-nominated band that has weathered three decades. The band’s glam-influenced EP Butter Miracle: Suite One, their first album in seven years, was released on May 21,2021,

By the time Counting Crows took the stage  around 9 p.m., the pavilion was full and the hill was booked solid with people.  The band opened with “Goodnight Elisabeth” and led right into “Pale Blue Eyes”.  Adam Duritz told the crowd,  “We are really glad to be on fucking tour” and  “Glad to see people outta’ their houses.” Indeed!

A highlight was a nice three-song acoustic set which included Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil”.  The band played favorites like “Mr. Jones” but also songs like “Bobby and the Rat-Kings” which is from the new EP.   The show seemed a little more downbeat compared with some of the past tours but overall I enjoyed it.

The supporting acts are both singer/songwriters out of NYC  Sean Barna and Matt Sucich.
