Review: Van Go Go’s single “Imaginary Friend” – December 7, 2020

Our Detroit boys Van Go Go are at it again! They just released a follow-up single to “Big Mistake” with another energetic rock song, with bitingly honest lyrics. Drawing heavily on 80s, with its catchy hooks and a pop sensibility, “Imaginary Friend” describes a relationship with a false friend, the kind that smiles to your face, showers you with compliments, while stabbing you in the back. We all know the type. The lyrics say,

“You always show your face when it’s Halloween/ You pull the compliments when I know you really don’t mean them/You’re my imaginary friend.”

At first listen, the vocal harmonies and hard-driving tempo remind me of classic 80s–Rick Springfield, Loverboy, and Night Ranger.  This suits me fine.  Fans of music from this era ought to give Van Go Go a whirl! Rock At Night looks forward to seeing a full EP or album in the future!

“Imaginary Friend” was produced by super Producer/Engineer Chuck Alkazian (Pop Evil, Soundgarden, Tantric) at legendary Pearl Sound Studios (Asking Alexander, Eminem, Filter).

Van Go Go: Nathan Mackinder (vocals), Jason Schaller (guitar), Paxton Olney (bass) and Jonah Brockman (drums).
