Review: Odd City’s single “The Upside Down”
Modern metal outfit Odd City skillfully creates an unsettling, dark space in this lead track from its debut album Fission.
Amidst a lacerating soundscape of guitars, the lyrics depict a world of the subconscious and taboo on one hand and conscious and clinical on the other.
Carl Jung once wrote of “individuation,” the process of fulfillment of each individual which negates neither the conscious or unconscious position but does justice to them both. With this song, Odd City injects electricity, piss, and blood into this concept and makes it come alive.
Taking in this track in the Rock At Night listening room, we couldn’t help but think this would be an appropriate, heavier soundtrack to, say, “Stranger Things.”
Bring on the nightmares.
Who is Odd City?
Odd City, from Detroit, MI., is a unique and outspoken rock band consisting of Mike Szuminski (vocals, lead guitar), Mike Kap (bass, vocals), Pavel Guysinsky (rhythm guitar) and Brett Redwood (drums).
