Review: Formal Sppeedwear’s single, “A Concise History” – Release date June 30, 2026
Rock At Night had the absolute pleasure of catching Stoke-on-Trent trio Formal Sppeedwear live at The Garage in London back in May. Having only spun a few tracks prior to the gig, nothing quite prepared me for the sheer force of their live set. Innovative, artsy, and delightfully unpredictable, they immediately channel a heavy Talking Heads influence. Safe to say, I was completely sold and needed to hear more. It is genuinely hard to believe a three-piece can generate this massive of a sonic footprint—anchored by a driving, funky bassline, infectious dance grooves, and uniquely staccato, rhythmic vocals. Now, Formal Sppeedwear has returned with “A Concise History,” the brilliant second single from their upcoming debut album, Punch Card (arriving September 11th via Melodic Records).
Rock At Night Says: “A Concise History” is a wonderfully erratic, frenetic, and quirky ride. The track masterfully blends the art-funk ethos of Talking Heads—complete with David Byrne-esque vocal deliveries—and vintage ’80s synth accents that chirp like retro, data-processing mainframes. It’s a delightfully robotic slice of modern music that proudly harkens back to the late-70s and early-80s New Wave innovations of pioneering bands like XTC, Devo, Trans-X, and early Oingo Boingo.
