Single Review: Nonetheless’ single “Better Off” – Release date February 10, 2023

It may be true that there isn’t hardcore “rock” music on the radio anymore, but that doesn’t mean that some of the power pop that makes it that far is bad. In fact, if you listen to the music closely, you can find some enjoyable elements that make it as good as any harder piece. The Colorado band Nonetheless utilizes their power pop sensibilities, putting an edge on the genre with their newest song “Better Off.”

The song, due to hit the streets on February 10, isn’t your typical Valentine’s Day fare. The band, comprised of the duo of vocalist Brenden Worthington and guitarist Taylor Spain, worked with the directing team altr. to put a horror film take on this particular song. It is a tremendously well-done song, both in audio and video, and the work is deserving of attention across the board.

The video takes place with the band driving through the snowy streets of Denver…why? Worthington is lamenting his love life, stating he is “better off alone” than with the person in question. As Spain lays down some serious solo licks, we notice that the air freshener hanging from the rearview mirror is dripping blood and Worthington has crimson stains on his hands. There’s a twist to the ending…but we’ll let you see that for yourself!

The song as a whole is an excellently crafted piece of power pop rock. It is deserving of being heard by a wider audience, but pop radio might not be a place for it – it seems like it is too well done, rocks a bit too hard, to be heard alongside the likes of The Killers or Fall Out Boy. There isn’t word on whether there is an album in the future, so we’re going to have to settle for this excellent overall work from Nonetheless and hope that there is much more from them in the future.
