The Quilts

By Anita Stewart, Managing Editor

Band: The Quilts

Review of Single and Video: “Time

Release Date: June 25, 2021

The Quilts hail from Ohio and this particular song had it’s beginnings over fourteen years ago. This song has been released as a follow up to the band’s well received and very poignant song “Sweet Molasses” about addiction that was released in April of this year.

Altonen says, “I wrote the genesis of “Time” fourteen years ago, the morning after a red eye flight from Cleveland to Minneapolis. I had flown in to Cleveland for a long weekend to play a show with a band I loved and to spend some time golfing with my uncles, cousin, and father. Before I flew back to Minneapolis, my father informed me that he was diagnosed with a terminal disease and did not have long to live. This weighed on me and I spent the morning back in Minneapolis crafting this song as a coping mechanism to deal with the weight of this situation.” He continues, “Miraculously, my father is still alive. I happened to shelve the song a number of years ago and when we were starting this project, going through some of the back catalogue of unreleased material, Chris was interested in this song. I explained to him the meaning and genesis of this and we turned it into less of a song of lament and more of a song championing the power of life and our increasing awareness of our limited time here on this earth.”

Rock at Night says:The song is like an anthem to the sacredness of life capturing beautiful moments. This song is very 90’s sounding, rock with a touch of grunge. Way different than the earlier release from this band “Sweet Molasses.” The video is touching, flowing through fleeting glimpses of imagery like rain on a rose, greenery, the sun rising and cresting over the horizon interspersed with high technology, air travel, nuclear explosions and old footage of astronauts traveling in space.

The Quilts are Chris Scott on lead vocals, Steven Altonen on guitar, Mike Hennel on drums and Doug Roskovics on bass. “Time” was written and produced by Chris Scott and Steven Altonen. The original version of the song was recorded and engineered by Altonen at his studio in Cincinnati, OH.

Super Producer/Engineer Chuck Alkazian (Pop Evil, Soundgarden, Tantric) co-produced the track’s final version at legendary Pearl Sound Studios (Asking Alexandria, Eminem, Filter) in Canton, MI.
