Frank Iero and the Future Violents "Barriers"

Album Review: Frank Iero and the Future Violent’s Barriers–Release date May 31, 2019 under UNFD

Frank Iero

Frank Iero and the Future Violent’s (guitarist/vocalist in My Chemical Romance) third solo album Barrier was released on May 31st under the label UNFD–and it was love at first listen!  The sound is very dark, post-punk blend with an uplifting punk or pop feel, with heavy influences–think Nine Inch Nails meets The Cure.  Yes, the late-80s and early-90s feel are truly captured in a tight little package, much to my pleasure.  Barriers really hit my nostalgic button, making me yearn for that time period.

The album starts with a different feel-good, gospel-ly, 50s sing-a-long with “A New Day’s Coming”.  Don’t be fooled with the first song because the rest of the album takes on a different feel.  Songs with dark, Trent Reznor-ish heavy, minor-key guitar riffs, with punk influences include “Feaver Dream”.  Listening to “Moto-Pop”, with its fast, pop-punk, hard-driving beat showed influences of Jack White and even The Cure.  “Basement Eyes” is starts very heavy and grungy, but then breaks into harmonies as the song progresses.  More Robert Smith-ish vocals ensue with songs like “Ode to Destruction” and “No Love”.

I really liked every cut on the album, which made me intrigued to capture to band on tour.  They are currently touring in America and heading to Europe in July.

Frank Iero and the Future Violents is Frank Iero, Evan Nestor, Matt Armstrong, Tucker Rule and Kayleigh Goldsworthy. Barriers was recorded and mixed by Steve Albini.
