10,000 Maniacs entertain ‘lucky’ crowd on Friday the 13th with superb show

10,000 Maniacs

By Mike McKenney, Rock At Night New England Correspondent

Venue: The Wolf Den, Mohegan Sun, Uncaseville, Connecticut–Friday January 13, 2017

It was ironic that Friday the thirteenth brought the 10,000 Maniacs to the Wolf Den. However, they didn’t scare their fans away.

In truth, their avant-garde style, made popular in the 80’s and back on display with early hits such as “Like the Weather”, “Whats the Matter Here”, and “Candy Tree” had the crowd singing and swaying.  Led on vocals and violin by two time member Mary Ramsey,  original band members John Lombardo, Dennis Drew, and Steve Gustafson were accompanied by long time drummer Jerry Augustyniak and lead guitarist Jeff Erickson.

While the entire band was strong all night, John, Steve, and Jeff seemed to  enjoy playing together again, as was evident in the music throughout the night. Mary’s eclectic vocals and dreamy inflections left her personal mark on favorites “Because the Night, and “Trouble Me”.  She also was enjoying her stay at the Mohegan Sun hotel, mentioning to the audience at one point that she never had such a great room with a beautiful view overlooking the river.

The 15 song set continued by mixing some early songs with some newer ones. The encore of favorites “Just like Heaven, and “These are the Days” left fans longing for more.
