Stevie Nicks and Chrissie Hynde

When I saw that Stevie Nicks and The Pretenders were playing at the Amelie Arena, Tampa, all I could say is “Wow!” A dream line-up for us Baby Boomers and Generation X’ers who remember listening to Fleetwood Mac in junior high and high school. They ruled the radio station with “Rumours” and “Tusk”. The band rocked and then there was the soap opera with the Lindsey Buckingham / Stevie Nicks and John and Christie McVie romance and break-ups.

Of course, let’s not diminish the fantastic Chrissie Hynde. Who does not love “Ohio” and “Brass In Pocket”?   I remember when she married Jim Kerr of Simple Minds and I thought “what a power couple”—but unfortunately they didn’t last.

Well, the evening of November 2nd was a magical one. I noticed most of the audience was comprised of women who were wearing long flowing dresses or skirts with handkerchief hemlines, hats, top hats—you name it. There were a lot of high-heeled black pumps and booties as well as corsets.

Now, the photo shoot for the evening was at the soundboard but it was still a thrill to be in the same room with these talented, icons. Chrissie Hynde walked on the stage looking fit in jeans and a pink blazer playing a medium –blue Fender Telecaster guitar. I really loved her rock star shag hair and have to say she really looked great. She walked around with the guitar, sang, and posed. Lots of fun!

Stevie Nicks came out on the stage wearing a long black Renaissance style dress with long sleeves that melded into finger gloves. She looked stunning and her voice was fantastic. A nice touch was the duet between Stevie Nicks and Chrissie Hynde singing “Quit Draggin’ My Heart Around.” The original, of course, was penned and sung with Tom Petty. The two women looked like close friends as they put arms around each other and made eye contact. It was really a special moment seeing the two icons and pals on stage at the same time.

Nick’s band also featured long-time collaborator and guitarist “Waddy” Wachtel. The man has played with everybody on the block, including writing “Werewolves of London” with Warren Zevon.

As some may know photographers have limited time on the floor so a full review is not possible—but from what I observed, it was a beautiful nostalgic blend of old favorites and recent hits.
