TAMPA BREAKWAY FESTIVAL – April 26th-27th
Kyng
By Gus Samarco, Rock At Night Raleigh Correspondent –

Venue: Memorial Auditorium (Lincoln Theater) Raleigh, North Carolina – October 4 2016

I was pretty excited to see Kyng again after seeing them at the Orion Music Festival, back in 2012.  I was not going to let Hurricane Matthew or anything stop me–thank God  the good fellas at Lincoln Theater did not postpone the show, which was slated to be outside. Instead, they moved the gig to an indoor venue, Raleigh’s Memorial Auditorium. Fancy? Well, let’s just say the symphony was playing in the other room…

As you all already know, I am a headbanger from the Paleozoic era, and anytime I get to see Old School Metal, it brings me back to fond memories of my youth. Nostalgic, perhaps? Well,  “old school” you might say. Sure, and that’s what I’m talking about people.  This is well-made, melodic, solid, metal with great vocals.  It’s not a secret that I’m the biggest PIA out there when the subject is metal singers–and Eddie did not disappoint at the Raleigh show with his powerful and melodic singing.

Kyng delivered a powerful metal show, with a very unpretentious attitude to a public that had lined up outside the venue. After two hours of waiting before the first song,  the crowd was obviously impressed with the show, felt it was worth the wait–and was asking for more.

With the new album Breathe in the Water just out of the oven, Kyng brought a mix of classic songs from previous albums as well as the brand spanking new one. Did I mention heavy? Mr Pepe spanked that poor drum kit for the whole set and together with Tony Castaneda on the bass, they built the foundation for Eddie Veliz to lay the power of his six stringer and melodic vocals.  It was actually what this crowd was looking for and needed.  It was the storm before the storm, which hit North Carolina over the weekend, knocking out power and flooding streets.

I’ll be writing a separate review article about Breath in the Water in the very near future. Stay tuned. here’s a link to purchase the album http://amzn.to/2dVPmsZ Support the music you love, folks.
