Review: Timberwolf at the Shebeen, Melbourne

Venue: Shebeen, Melbourne, 19th March

It was a privilege to see TIMBERWOLF perform his first headline show to an intimate, appreciative audience at the Shebeen in Melbourne. Adelaide singer-songwriter and guitar guru TIMBERWOLF, bared all, singing of lost love experiences and ‘could have been’ relationships, using his distinctive vocal range and ‘heart on the sleeve’ lyrics. He began solo, presenting 4 songs acoustically. Then was joined by 2 fellow musicians; drummer friend, Matt Birkin, from the Adelaide band, Wasted Wanderers and a useful bass guitarist.

TIMBERWOLF, (aka Chris Panousakis) has spent a lot of time recently writing new music. At the Shebeen, he presented much of this new material, explaining where the lyrics came from and involving the audience as much as possible. ‘Vulnerable’ is the word my daughter used to describe his performance when she met him after the gig, and he responded so positively. He acknowledged that this was the greatest praise.

Described as a modern folk/blues/rock musician, TIMBERWOLF is much more than that. The honesty of his lyrics and the fragility of his songs work their way into your soul, leaving you with the feeling that you have experienced something quite spiritual. I have been following TIMBERWOLF for a couple of years or more now. After seeing him perform at the WOMADelaide festival in 2015, I told him that he was on a roller coaster to success. I hope he’s enjoying the ride.
